Hailing from Roswell, GA, Myka Murphy is a mezzo-soprano who has been described as  “a (vocal) powerhouse…with an abundant quality of strength” (Opera Wire). 

Ms. Murphy is making a name for herself in both the concert and the operatic worlds. This upcoming season, she is making her Calvin University debut as the alto soloist in the Messiah. In addition, she will appear in Sacramento in the world premiere of Waiting Rooms, by fellow Juilliard alumnus Trey Makler. She will also sing the role of Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser with Atlanta Concert Opera, and perform as the alto soloist in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Natchez Music Festival and Festival South.

In 2022–2023, she was the alto soloist for the Mississippi premiere of Dan Locklair’s Requiem and returned to Opera Mississippi as Madame Flora in Menotti’s The Medium and Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and sang the alto solos for the Messiah with Natchez Music Festival.

Concert highlights include her Jackson Symphony (Michigan) debut as the mezzo soloist for Beethoven’s 9th  Symphony, acting as cover for the alto soloist in Juilliard’s Songfest at Carnegie Hall, and her Alice Tully Hall debut of a selection of songs from Libby Larsen’s Love After 1950. 

Operatic highlights include: Baba the Turk in The Rake's Progress at Boston University and the Sorceress in the Juilliard production of Dido and Aeneas with Juilliard 415, a role she  reprised in a Juilliard touring production with performances at London’s Holland Park and Versaille’s Opéra Royal.  Other operatic engagements include: Thelma Yablonski in Later the Same Evening with Boston University Fringe Festival, La Principessa in Suor Angelica and Zita in Gianni Schicchi at Red River Lyric Opera, Giovanna in Rigoletto with Mississippi Opera, the Countess in Queen of Spades with the Russian Opera Workshop and her Lincoln Center premiere as Maman and La Libellule in L'enfant et les sortilèges with Juilliard Orchestra.

Ms. Murphy has delved into the world of new music, including recorded work with Maria Mykolenko for her  “Sounds and Voices” and "Sorrow–a Sound Mosaic," both of which have been showcased at the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. She also plans to develop two new works with fellow Juilliard alumni Trey Makler and Ivan Enrique Rodriguez. 

Other highlights include: participating in a master class with Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin of the Metropolitan Opera, singing Mistress Quickly in a Falstaff scene workshop with  Juilliard’s Lab Orchestra with Maestro Gianandrea Noseda and working with mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe during her residency at Juilliard.

Ms. Murphy has a Master of Music in Voice from Juilliard and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern Mississippi, and recently completed an Artist Certificate in the Opera Institute at Boston University, under the tutelage of Professor Penelope Bitzas. She is currently managed by Martha Wade of Wade Artist Management.
